# Getting Started

Hello everyone.  I’m excited to welcome you to the new CareerPQ community forum.

I’m Scott, CareerPQ’s Founder and Head Coach.  We started this community as a place for professionals to become more powerful by supporting one another through the opportunities and challenges experienced in today’s workplace.  As you explore the community, you will see that most of the spaces are open only to paid members.  Why?  Because we wanted to create a confidential, safe and highly productive community (that can’t be found on social media sites).

We’re happy that you’re exploring our community.  Here are some highlights:
  • Check out our Community Guidelines for the best ways to use this space.
  • Review our Events and Announcements for updates on workshops, coaching circles and other services (some of which are available to non-paying members).
  • Review our Resources space to find helpful tools for your job search or learning needs.
  • Not yet a member, but have a question to ask our experts and members?  We're here to help, so ask away here or become a member here.

For Paying Members:
  • Introduce yourself to our other members here.
  • Visit the Career Changers space to engage with professionals who are making a career pivot.
  • Visit the Job Seekers space to find a supportive group of other professionals who are looking for a new job.
  • Visit the Career Developers space to grow your career with the support of like-minded professionals.

Thank you for visiting the CareerPQ community forum.
Welcome!  If you're not yet a CPQ:HQ member, we're happy you're here and are willing to try to answer your questions... so tell us what you're thinking.
No questions... just saying hello and testing the system.
CareerPQ Community Code of Conduct

All members of this CareerPQ community forum are required to comply with the following Code of Conduct.

Respect
The CareerPQ community forum is an intentionally positive online community dedicated to professional development. We recognize and celebrate the creativity and collaboration of our independent members and the diversity of skills, talents, experiences, cultures, and opinions that they bring to our community.

The CareerPQ community is an inclusive environment, based on treating all individuals respectfully, regardless of race, gender or gender identity (including transgender status), sexual orientation, age, disability, nationality, ethnicity, religion (or lack thereof), political affiliation, or career path.

We value respectful behavior above individual opinions.

Respectful behavior includes but is not limited to:
  • Be considerate, kind, constructive, and helpful.
  • Avoid demeaning, discriminatory, harassing, hateful, or physically threatening behavior, speech, and imagery.
  • If you’re not sure, ask someone instead of assuming. No, really. Just ask the Administrators. We’d rather hear from you than hear about something you said or did after the fact, and we are here to help.
  • Don’t be a bystander. Role model respectful behaviour, but also help to address disrespect when you see it.
Disrespectful behavior outside this community may be considered a violation of this code of conduct at the discretion of the Administrators.

Privacy
This community is not a public space. However, no one has signed a non-disclosure agreement (“NDA”) to participate, and you should not presume anything you say here will remain private, so act accordingly (ex: protect IP and legally-protected information, change the names of a challenging manager is asking for advice, etc.).

Respecting fellow members includes honoring each individual’s desired level of privacy.  Members will gain the most from this community by sharing openly, but we honor those who wish to not disclose their full names, employer names, etc.

Not For Commercial Activity (Mostly)
The CareerPQ community is not a place for obvious commercial activities such as recruiting, marketing, or other solicitation but we do realize that there is a fine line between unwelcome selling and announcing a new business venture.  To that end, we’ve created the Network, Refer & Offer space as the ONLY space where members should share commercial offers.

Where commercial activity is allowed (ex: post available jobs, announce a new business opportunity, organize a networking event, etc.), it is just as unwelcome to post an unrelated commercial offering (ex: offer to sell your Superbowl tickets) as it is to post in non-commercial channels.

Resolve Peacefully
We believe peer-to-peer discussions, feedback, and corrections can help build a stronger, safer, and more welcoming community.

If you see someone violating any part of this Code of Conduct, we urge you to respectfully dissuade them from such behavior. Expect that others in the community wish to help keep the community respectful and welcome your input in doing so.

If you experience disrespectful behavior toward yourself or anyone else and feel in any way unable or unwilling to respond or resolve it respectfully (for any reason), please immediately bring it to the attention of an Administrator. We want to hear from you about anything that you feel is disrespectful, threatening, or just something that could make someone feel distressed in any way. We will listen and work to resolve the matter.

Apologize for Mistakes
Should you catch yourself behaving disrespectfully, or be confronted as such, listen intently, own up to your words and actions, and apologize accordingly. No one is perfect, and even well-intentioned people make mistakes. What matters is how you handle them and that you avoid repeating them in the future.

(NOTE:  We respectfully thank Rands Leadership Slack for inspiration in writing our Code of Conduct.)
Are you a new member and ready to get started?  Follow these steps:

  1. Go and Introduce Yourself. Tell us about you, your work and your hopes for this community.
  2. Update your profile with a photo and any facts that you’d like to share.
  3. Read our Code of Conduct.
  4. Explore the spaces.  Note that the Welcome group of spaces are open to the public and the Member Spaces and Move to Action group of spaces are open only to paid members.  All members have access to all spaces (though member access to other CareerPQ services will vary depending on their payment level).
  • Our goal is to create a confidential, safe and highly productive community of learning and support.  Unlike many social media platforms (ex: Facebook groups), this is a closed group that focuses on shared outcomes.  Do your best to keep topic threads focused and your comments concise and impactful.
  • All are welcome to contribute, but if you want to hang back and lurk, that’s cool too.  It sounds corny, but “you’ll get out what you put in” applies here.
  • We expect that we’ll treat others with respect. We encourage debate.  We ask for patience, and we remind you that you’re here to learn and that means being open to a diverse set of ideas.
If you know someone who should be a part of this community, drop Scott a note (scott@careerpq.com), and he’ll invite them.

The CareerPQ community forum is a living breathing creature.  As such, we expect it to evolve and thank you for being a part of creating this special place.

Let’s become more powerful together!
